Why Our Occupational Accident Insurance Stands Out: Say No to Ambulance Sublimits

Why Our Occupational Accident Insurance Stands Out: Say No to Ambulance Sublimits

April 30th, 2025

When it comes to providing comprehensive financial protection for Owner Operator Truckers, Insurance Agents play a key role.  Motor Carriers rely on you to recommend coverage that shields them from the unpredictable costs of workplace injuries.  But what happens when policies fall short on critical components, like emergency medical transportation?  This is where an Ambulance Sublimit can potentially lead to significant gaps in coverage—and why it may be something to avoid.

At Workforce Insurance Underwriters, we're pushing past these limitations with our Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy, which does not sublimit ambulance expenses.  Here's why that matters for you as an Insurance Agent and how this sets our coverage apart in a competitive landscape.

What is an Ambulance Sublimit?

An Ambulance Sublimit is a cap on how much an insurance policy will cover for emergency medical transportation, whether by ground or air.  While this might seem like a minor detail, real-world data paints a very different picture.

  • Ground ambulances can charge $1,200 or more, depending on mileage, the care needed, and staffing.
  • Air ambulances can cost up to $100,000 or more per trip, depending on the location, provider, aircraft type, distance traveled, and level of medical support provided.

Most Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policies severely limit coverage for these costs.  For example:

  • $1,000 for ground ambulance services.
  • $7,000 for an air ambulance.
  • Some caps go no higher than $10,000 for all emergency transportation combined.

Considering the actual costs of these services, it's clear that sublimits may leave a potential financial gap for Independent Contractors.

The Role of Occupational Accident Insurance for Truckers

Occupational Accident Insurance offers essential protection for Owner Operator Truckers, covering work-related Medical Expenses, Disability, Death and Dismemberment.  Commonly viewed as a cost-effective alternative to Workers Compensation, it's tailored for truckers who operate as Independent Contractors.

While these policies provide valuable support, Ambulance Sublimits remain a glaring flaw in many Occupational Accident Insurance policies.  When an emergency strikes, sublimits transform life-saving care into a potential financial crisis.

Why Should Motor Carriers Care?

Motor Carriers could face unintended consequences when their Independent Contractors are left with out-of-pocket expenses due to sublimits.  This practice, known as balance billing, occurs when medical providers charge individuals for a balance not covered by insurance.

If an Independent Contractor faces significant bills after utilizing an ambulance, they may be incentivized to seek Workers Compensation benefits from their Motor Carrier.  Unlike Occupational Accident Insurance, Workers Compensation does not allow balance billing.  This creates potential liability and operational headaches for Motor Carriers—something they want to avoid.

Why Our Policy Stands Out

At Workforce Insurance Underwriters, we've designed our Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy to bridge the real-world gaps present in some other plans.

One of our key differentiators?  We break the mold by not imposing Ambulance Sublimits, delivering a truly distinctive solution in the market.

Here's what that means for your clients:

  • Added Peace of Mind: No worrying about hidden caps on ground or air ambulance costs.
  • Additional Financial Protection: Truckers receive the emergency care they need without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Stronger Relationships: For Motor Carriers, it helps reduce the risk of Independent Contractors seeking Workers Compensation benefits and protects their business operations.

By recommending our policy, Insurance Agents can provide a solution that delivers industry-leading protection and addresses one of the biggest pain points in Occupational Accident Insurance.

The Bigger Picture

For Insurance Agents, choosing the right Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy isn't just about price or benefits—it's about trust.  By aligning with policies that offer comprehensive and thoughtful coverage, like no Ambulance Sublimits, you're showcasing your commitment to client satisfaction.

We aim to help you become a superhero for your Motor Carrier and Independent Contractor clients.  With our policy, you're not just selling a product but offering additional peace of mind and financial stability.

February 26th, 2025 | For an industry so heavily reliant on precision and planning, Trucking has a blind spot that many overlook—passenger safety. The scenario is the same whether it's a family member traveling with a driver, a friend sitting in during long hauls, or any other authorized passenger accompanying a trip. If an accident occurs, the financial and legal fallout can be catastrophic. Most traditional Occupational Accident Insurance policies provide very low limits and only cover passengers of Owner Operators. This can leave Motor Carriers exposed to potential lawsuits and crippling financial repercussions.
